Hepatitis C
An estimated four million Americans are infected with the hepatitis C virus, the majority of them unaware that they are infected. Often causing no symptoms before progressing to severe liver disease, the hepatitis C virus is the most frequent cause of viral-related cirrhosis in the United States and the leading indication for liver transplantation in this country. The primary care physician plays a pivotal role in the diagnosis and management of this common disease.

The hepatitis A, B and C viruses account for the majority of cases of acute viral hepatitis in the United States. Infection with the hepatitis C virus, however, is by far the most common cause of chronic viral hepatitis in Americans. Approximately 30,000 new infections occur every year, and an estimated 85% of patients with acute hepatitis C are unable to clear the virus and go on to develop chronic infection.
The overall goal of this program is to provide the skills and tools for practitioners to maximize the management and treatment of hepatitis C patients.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Recognize individuals at risk for hepatitis C infection and properly screen them for the disease
- Understand the different diagnostics tests available to establish the diagnosis of hepatitis C infection and how to use each test in different clinical situations
- Properly assess patients with hepatitis C infection, establish severity of disease and discuss prognosis of the disease with the patient.
- Discuss the current treatment of hepatitis C, including its indications, contraindications, toxicity and clinical application.
