With the enactment of HIPAA's Standards for Privacy of Individually Identifiable Health Information, the responsibility to keep certain health information secure, confidential, and private became a legally enforceable responsibility of your facility and its employees. In order for your facility to be successfully compliant, all employees must know and understand their responsibilities with regards to privacy and confidentiality.

COURSE OUTCOMES -- Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Apply privacy standards brought about by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule
- Identify the medical record as protected and confidential information
- Apply the hospital's policy on patient confidentiality
- Recognize examples and repercussions of patient-confidentiality breaches
- Identify what information can be released without prior approval from the patient
